Paul, a Pharisee skilled in the interpretation of Israel\u2019s Scripture, teaches that God welcomes Jews and Gentiles alike\u2014all who have faith.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paul first established the church in <strong>Corinth (modern-day Greece)<\/strong>, and his letters show that he exchanged correspondence with them and planned future visits (1 Cor 5:9; 16:5\u20139).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Corinthian church was founded during Paul\u2019s missionary travels (Acts 18:1, 11). Paul probably died in Rome before 65 AD, which makes 1 Corinthians <strong>likely to have been composed in the 50s<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paul has a complex response to a social dilemma for Gentiles, whether Christians should avoid eating meat offered to idols in pagan ceremonies. Paul agrees that idols have no real existence (1 Cor 8:4), but he cares about any potential for misunderstanding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul saw the many difficulties within the Corinthian church, but he hoped their faith would be a testimony of God\u2019s covenant faithfulness. We know that the same God made a covenant with Abraham, came to earth as Jesus, and leads through the Holy Spirit. Zechariah\u2019s wife, <strong>Elizabeth, <\/strong>was also a descendant of Aaron, the first high priest and brother of Moses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Zechariah and Elizabeth lived somewhere in <strong>the hill country of Judea<\/strong>. The angel appeared to Zechariah in <strong>God\u2019s temple in Jerusalem<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This story takes place <strong>during Herod&#8217;s reign in Judea<\/strong>, close to the end of his rule in 4 BC.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The angel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah<\/strong> in the temple to tell him his wife <strong>Elizabeth would bear a son<\/strong>, despite her old age. They were to name him John. <strong>John would be filled with the Holy Spirit<\/strong> and prepare God\u2019s people for the coming Lord.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the birth of John the Baptist, God was preparing the way for Jesus, the everlasting King.
